Our clients came to us with a pretty little cottage close to the south coast. Their brief was simple: to create an open plan kitchen-dining-games area, separate to the more formal living room. It needed to be robust, working like a farm building, but also warm and homely inside. The design was directly inspired by the existing black-clad façade which is typical of the area.

Rather than literally mimicking the existing, we took the essence of the cladding and created a modern augmented addition, still subservient to the original. The design provides a large west-facing picture window, mirrored by a 3 x 2m roof-light above, set within a whitewashed plywood interior.
