St Mark’s Islington
At nearly 200 years old, St Mark’s in Islington is a Grade II listed church, recognised for its special architectural and historic interest. The church’s access was inadequate as there was no level or ramped access except temporary installations on Sundays. We successfully gained planning permission for a finned metal ramp structure, design to be current and yet respectful to the host building. Removal of the hostile cast iron railings opens the church up to the public. The ramp has been designed so as to have minimal impact with its radially arranged fins permitting views straight through at all points. The adjacent areas will be landscaped to provide a sensory garden and the main front steps have been faithfully restored. The interventions will provide a welcoming, accessible entrance; a permanent addition to allow the church to be enjoyed by all.
